| Department: | Secretary, Department of Animal Ecology |
| Born: | 15th September 1962, Zvolen, The Slovak Republic |
| Education: | Graduated from the Technical University, Faculty of Forestry, Zvolen, specialisation forest engineering, in 1985. PhD degree in Forestry and Agricultural Phytopathology and Plant Protection received from the the same university in 1993. Doctoral thesis dealt with the ecology of jewel beetles (Coleoptera, Buprestidae) on Norway spruce (Picea abies). |
| Position: | Institute of Forest Ecology, Slovak Academy of Sciences, Department of Animal Ecology. Researcher, forest entomologist, specialisation: forest Coleoptera. |
| Research fields: | Xylophilous beetles (Coleoptera) associated with trees in natural-, semi-natural- and culture-influenced forests in Slovakia. Professional interests include namely the representatives of bark beetles (Scolytidae), long-horn beetles (Cerambycidae) and jewel beetles (Buprestidae) as well as species of the other beetle families in their ecological and economic significance. Entomological research is carried out in oak, beech, fir-beech and Norway spruce forests throughout the country. Recently, greater attention is paid to natural forests and forest reserves (http://www.ecosystems.sk). Also, the old trees growing solitarily in pasture woodlands, namely oaks (Quercus spp.), are investigated for their beetle faunas. Lists of species are made, and recommendations concerning conservation and management of valuable habitats, trees and species are proposed. |
| Key research fields: | Biology and ecology of selected beetle species (species of conservation interest, pest species), their frequency and abundance, habitat preference and ties to host plants, dispersal and flight activity, spatial distribution, population dynamics. Some studies are aimed to provide information on beetle assemblages, their structure and diversity in various environments and conditions. |
| Further personal interests: | Ornithology - birdwatching, bird conservation, ecology of fish. |
