Seminar on birds´ recognition and protection 3.–4. 3. 2007
The first weekend in March, more than 100 members and non-members of the Slovak Ornithological Society /BirdLife Slovakia were attending their yearly Seminar on birds´ recognition and protection, taking place, as usually, in the building of the Institute of Forest Ecology SAS in Zvolen. A representative of the partner organisation SOS/BirdLife Schweiz Mr. Fritz Hirt was present at the event, too. The formal section comprised evaluation of the former year − in the summarising reports, Programme and Budget for year 2007. At the seminary, two important Slovak ornithologists Doc. A. Randík and Dr. A. Stollmann were awarded with an honour membership. The two scientists have contributed significantly to development of birds´ recognition and protection in Slovakia.

On the afternoon programme there were interesting presentations of research on the Great Bustard (Otis tarda), Black Stork (Ciconia nigra), Gulls (Laridae), Common Tern (Sterna hirundo) and Lesser Grey Shrike (Lanius minor). There was also presented actual information on mapping birds in Bratislava, winter bird census, assembling and processing the data. The evening programme was enriched with projection of records taken in Spain, Scandinavia and Africa. Interesting was also a film dealing with Protected Bird Area in the Czech Republic, and the genuine jewel of the evening was the documentary film "Endangered wings" on protection of the Imperial Eagle (Aquila heliaca), European Roller (Coracias garrulus), Great Bustard (Otis tarda) and on protection of the agricultural land. The Sunday field excursion, offered the attendees the opportunity to visit the well-known primeval forest Badínsky prales, one of the oldest nature reserves in Slovakia, proclaimed in year 1913. Apart form the 33 observed bird species, the attendees had a “live” experience with a frightened wild boar, and they also had opportunity to “enjoy” fresh tracks of a bear-lady with her young, of an European lynx and even of a wolf.
